Lichen Sclerosus
Lichen sclerosus is a chronic, inflammatory skin condition that commonly affects the anal and genital areas, but also can appear on other parts of the body.
This condition’s symptoms aren’t severe, or life-threatening, but it can cause discomfort and irritation during daily activities, like sitting or urinating, and can also render sexual activity uncomfortable.
Here are a few of the most common symptoms of lichen sclerosus:
• Raised white spots on the vulva or anus.
• Itching in the affected areas.
• Soreness, pain, or discomfort during sexual activity or urination.
• Wrinkled or smooth patches of skin that are discolored.
• Fragile skin that appears scarred or bruises easily.
Formerly known as a “rare” condition, Lichen sclerosus is now seen as relatively common, with 1 in 80 women experiencing symptoms. Although men can experience this condition, too, the following groups of women are most affected by this issue:
• Pre- or post-menopausal women.
• Women who have autoimmune diseases.
• Women who have family members with lichen sclerosus.

A Common Diagnosis
In the past, it was more common for healthcare providers to misdiagnose women with other conditions rather than lichen sclerosus. Some of these conditions include:

In just 1 to 2, 30-second sessions, we can typically address most patients’ lichen sclerosus symptoms.
3. Aftercare
Recovery is relatively minimal. Most patients only experience pinpoint bleeding and notice a slight sunburn-like feeling following their appointment. You’ll heal best by avoiding bathtubs, swimming pools, jacuzzis, and sexual contact for about a week following treatment.
