None of us are excited to see wrinkles and other signs of aging in the mirror, especially when they show up a decade or two ahead of time.
Certain signs of aging that occur before age 35 may be considered signs of “premature” aging.
As we age, our cell turnover slows down. Older skin cells hang around longer, and new cells take longer to rise to the surface.
None of us can stop the signs of aging, but we can improve them so our appearance aligns more closely with our birthday.
Signs of Premature Aging
The aging process hits everyone differently, but we consider certain signs of aging “premature” if you notice them before age 35.
Sunspots: Sunspots, also called age spots and liver spots, are flat spots on your skin caused by sun exposure. These hyperpigmentations can develop on the skin of your face, the backs of hands, or forearms. People with fair skin and those with excessive sun exposure are more likely to experience this sign of premature aging.
Hyperpigmentation on the chest: Patchy discoloration on the chest is a common sign of premature aging. These areas of pigment are similar to sunspots and can be caused by sun damage. This kind of hyperpigmentation can also result from eczema or other skin conditions that damage the skin’s melanin cells.
Wrinkles or sagging: As collagen production slows in our 30s, it’s easier for visible wrinkles and sagging to get a foothold. Sun exposure can worsen the effect.
Causes of Premature Aging
Our bodies are all operating on their own timelines. But there are different factors, and preventable factors, that have a direct effect on how quickly the signs of early aging appear.
The toxins in cigarette smoke cause oxidative stress, leading to dryness, wrinkles and other signs of premature aging. Nicotine causes a narrowing of the capillaries in the outermost layers of your skin, restricting blood flow and depriving top layers of oxygen and nutrients. Many of the chemicals in tobacco smoke damage collagen and elastin. As a result, skin begins to sag and wrinkle prematurely.
Sun Exposure and Tanning
Tanning beds and sun exposure penetrate skin with harmful UV rays. UV rays damage the DNA in skin cells, causing wrinkles.
Drinking alcohol excessively dehydrates your body. Prolonged and chronic dehydration damages skin, causing it to sag and lose its shape.
Pigment spots and wrinkles can be triggered or worsened by environmental pollutants.
Our skin regenerates cells while we sleep. Sleep deprivation can lead to slower regeneration and older-looking skin.
Research suggests that eating a diet high in sugar and refined carbohydrates can damage your skin over time.
Chronic stress triggers an inflammatory response in your body. Stress hormones and inflammation can age cells faster. Stress can also have a domino effect, causing poor sleep and negatively impacting our diet, all of which can cause us to age prematurely.
Fight the Signs of Premature Aging
We all face different signs and degrees of aging, whether it is premature or right on schedule. At Blush Aesthetics, we will design customized treatment plans to optimize your results and prevent signs of aging over time.
Halo™ laser treatment reduces the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, sun damage and other visible signs of aging. Halo™’s hybrid fractional laser delivers effective ablative results with non-ablative technology. The laser penetrates skin to boost collagen and elastin production.
BBL™ not only reduces the appearance of the signs of aging, but recent studies also have shown that the treatment creates younger cells by changing their gene expression. Forever Young BBL™ delivers light energy to heat the upper layers of the skin, stimulating the body’s natural regeneration process to and revealing more radiant skin on the face, hands, chest or any other areas that are showing signs of aging.
Microneedling uses tiny needles to perforate the top layers of skin. The perforations trigger healing and the production of collagen and elastin. The treatment is used to improve issues such as fine lines, wrinkles, skin laxity, sun damage and other common signs of aging. Collagen supports and smoothes skin from the inside out. Elastin causes skin to “snap back” and tighten after it is stretched. Microneedling can also help skincare products to penetrate more deeply for optimal results.
Dermalinfusion first exfoliates the skin and extracts dead skin and debris, leaving a layer of fresh, new skin. We infuse new skin with specific serums designed to fight wrinkles or other signs of aging. A dermalinfusion can treat signs of aging on the neck, chest, hands, or other areas of the body.
Chemical peels exfoliate the top layers of skin so that new skin can emerge. During treatment, customized peel formulas penetrate to the deeper layers of your skin. A few days after treatment, the top, old top layers of skin slough and peel away. Imperfections such as fine lines and discolorations are swept away with the old skin layers. Blush Aesthetics creates a custom chemical peel for each person to ensure optimal results with fewer side effects and little to no recovery time. Stronger peels penetrate more deeply to reduce the appearance of deeper wrinkles.
