About Microneedling with RF

Radiofrequency microneedling, most often referred to as microneedling with RF, is a more recent advancement in microneedling technology.

Traditional microneedling uses a special tool fitted with tiny needles that create controlled punctures in the surface of the skin on the face, neck, and chest. While this can sound a little scary, we are talking about itty bitty, minute  that you can’t even notice. Literally the needles are thinner than a piece of your hair!

Your skin, however, definitely notices these “microwounds” created by the microneedling pen and begins to stimulate the healing process.

Microneedling with RF uses the same technique as traditional microneedling, but includes radiofrequency energy to generate heat and penetrate deeper layers of the skin. Those deeper healing processes result in elastin and collagen production, vital components of firm, smooth, tight skin.

Why is collagen important?

Chances are if you care about your skin, you’ve heard about collagen. A huge portion of med spa treatments are designed specifically to increase the production of collagen, after all. Collagen is responsible for many biological functions in mammals, but we love it because it provides the structural support for connective tissues, muscles, and skin.

So yeah, collagen is important to your skin elasticity and your bone health. It’s a pretty big deal.

How is microneedling with RF different from microneedling?

The heat produced by radiofrequency energy stimulates the production of collagen and elastin far more effectively than microneedling alone. It takes the effectiveness of the original procedure and boosts it, making it one of our favorite treatments!

RF energy also stimulates deeper tissues. This causes a more rigorous tightening of the skin while treating acne and acne scars, texture, fine lines, and more.

Microneedling with RF treats a variety of skin issues

With microneedling with RF, we achieve better results while treating a wide array of skin concerns. You will be thrilled with the total rejuvenation of your skin after treatment with our microneedling with RF device. While it can treat fine lines and wrinkles and hyperpigmentation, we LOVE microneedling for acne scars in Toledo and Ottawa Hills!

Microneedling with RF targets deeper layers of skin

The skin is separated into three basic layers: epidermis, dermis, and subcutaneous tissue. These layers are important factors to consider when you’re undergoing any kind of acne or skin treatment.

The outermost layer, the epidermis, is what traditional microneedling can affect. Microneedling with RF, on the other hand, delivers radiofrequency energy deep into the dermis layer for more effective collagen and elastin stimulation.

When it comes to youthful, glowing skin, you NEED collagen! It’s what keeps your skin strong, supple, and with a good amount of elasticity.

Microneedling with RF is customizable

The aesthetic experts at Blush Aesthetics can customize microneedling with RF treatments to each patient. We can adjust the puncture depth and level of RF energy used based on your unique skin needs and goals. We are also the best in the area at treating your active acne breakouts!

Benefits of microneedling with RF

At Blush Aesthetics, we understand our patients are looking for an effective treatment for concerns like acne scars, fine lines, and skin texture. Microneedling with RF is a safe, gentle treatment for all of that and more! Because skin is rejuvenated at a both a surface and cellular level, our microneedling with RF patients see improvements in the following common skin concerns:

  • Acne scars
  • Wrinkles and fine lines
  • Loose or sagging skin
  • Irregular texture
  • Enlarged pores
  • Uneven skin tone
  • Hyperpigmentation
  • Sun damage
  • Redness
  • Cystic Acne

Microneedling with RF is FDA-cleared and scientifically proven as safe and effective. It produces both immediate and progressive results with less downtime than more invasive skin ablation procedures. It’s so effective at tightening skin, many even consider microneedling with RF to be a nonsurgical alternative to a facelift! How can you beat that?

Microneedling for acne and acne scars

This may seem counterintuitive, but while microneedling is a great treatment for acne and acne scars, it is important to know we can’t perform microneedling over active acne. Skin that’s already irritated can get more inflamed from microneedling, and it could even spread infection. We will work with you to treat your active acne breakouts, and will perform microneedling with RF on areas of skin without an active breakout. With time, this will lead to your skin becoming healthier and less prone to breaking out, plus it will heal and brighten any hyperpigmentation scarring left over from old acne!

We have multiple treatments in our practice for both active acne and acne scars / discoloration left behind after breakouts. Even if microneedling is not the best treatment for you, we can develop a treatment plan to give you the best results with or without downtime.

Microneedling for hair restoration

Blush offers microneedling to treat various forms of hair loss. The same technology that works to regenerate your collagen and elastin production has been shown to affect hair follicles. Even alopecia areata has seen improvements after microneedling treatments! The healing processes triggered by microneedling don’t just boost production of those important proteins, it also surges nutrient-rich blood into the area.

Men who undergo microneedling on their facial skin often find their beard hair actually grows thicker after their three-treatment series! So if you have thinning hair, microneedling for hair restoration could be the answer.

What happens after microneedling with RF?

Following your microneedling with radiofrequency procedure, you could experience some swelling, bruising, and redness. Generally, side effects are mild enough that patients have no problems going right back to their day after their appointment.

You’ll want to avoid wearing makeup, using abrasive skin products, or submerging in pools for around 72 hours following the session. Activities like this could expose your skin to harsh chemicals and bacteria, which may cause adverse reactions.

You also need to intentionally avoid sun exposure or use strong protective measures when going outside.Wear at least SPF 30 on your skin whenever you are going to be exposed to sunlight (yes, even through a window). Your skin is extra sensitive to sunlight after treatments with microneedling with RF. Don’t worry about remembering all of this now, you’ll be given thorough post-op instructions when you come for your appointment.

Many people begin to see results very quickly, though we recommend a series of three treatments for the best possible results.

When to expect microneedling with RF results

While the exact time frame of your results from microneedling with radiofrequency will vary, most patients do notice some effects within the first few weeks. The healing process is progressive, so with time after your series of three treatments, your results will begin to compound. Generally, you can expect to see final results after 3 to 6 months. Those results tend to last about a year, so we usually recommend yearly maintenance appointments for upkeep.

Beware at-home microneedling

Is at-home microneedling effective? Not really. Buying an at-home microneedling tool is probably going to be a waste of your time and energy. At-home devices are designed to a higher level of general safety because the people using them are not trained. They penetrate only superficially, so not as deep as getting microneedling in an office or med spa and certainly not as deep as microneedling with RF.

But worse than not being effective, these at-home microneedling tools aren’t even all that safe! At-home devices tend to lack disposable tips. If they’re not properly sanitized, the device will harbor bacteria and fungus, which will cause infections. It could lead to serious skin issues if you’re not extremely careful with at-home microneedling.
